Additional information

The project (sponsored by ESA) was concerned with the microchemistry of pitting of aluminium alloys treated with a variety of conversion coatings. The approach taken, and described for AA2219 in this paper, was to carry out time dependent studies by high resolution Auger analysis, using a method developed at Surrey. Interrupted exposure of a sample in saline solution was carried out, the sample being returned to the Auger microscope for the examination of the same inclusion group between each exposure. The models established will enable a more purposeful choice of pretreatment for spacecraft components whilst in terrestrial storage.
