Double-weighted statement

This monograph offers the first book-length study of Chaucer's translations from Petrarch's Italian and Latin works. There is a consistently complex, painstaking translative analysis underpinning the monograph, tracing the trajectory of phrases and lines from one Italian poet to another and thence into English, or from Latin into Italian into English. In addition, the Chaucer and Petrarch archives are used in conjunction to throw light on specific historical events (the Visconti wedding of 1368) or textual developments (such as the role of manuscripts and early printed editions in determining the nature of the English sonnet form).
