Additional information

This paper describes the initial design concept and testing of a fibre interferometer for surface measurement. The paper demonstrated the potential for wavelength scanning using a tuneable laser combined with a dispersive optical probe. The paper gave initial experimental results pointing to the potential for this technique and outlined some of the challenges for implementation. This concept was also protected in a patent application WO2007144654. This work was a partial outcome of a PhD supported by an EPSRC Industrial CASE studentship. The impact of this work was to prove the feasibility of in process interferometry for surface metrology.
