Additional information

This manuscript highlights the optimum process conditions required to retain the original skeletal morphology of mineralised algae during the fabrication of hydroxyapatite. Such materials have direct application as bone fillers. This research contributed to securing of a Beaufort Marine Biodiscovery grant (Irish government funded, £1.4m), It furthermore resulted in the June Wilson Award (2011), for female scientist that shows excellence in the field of tissue engineering, biomaterials, pathology or related disciplines.
