This paper brings together an international team to investigate solvent effects in liquid phase reaction. This paper represents the first multi scale example including ab-initio calculations, terahertz spectroscopy and experimental data on kinetics and mass transfer to understand reactions of importance to many chemical and allied industries. The paper was nominated for the 2013 Eni award (an Italian multinational oil and gas company), which highlights the critical importance increasingly given by Eni to scientific research and issues of sustainability.
