This 62,000-word monograph is a revised version of the main section of the author’s PhD dissertation. It offers an innovative re-reading of the ekphrasis of Heracles’ shield, contained in the late-archaic poem of that name, and it investigates the material and iconographic details of the ornamentation described. The result of this detailed analysis is a reassessment of the artistic milieu from which the poet took inspiration and a reconstruction of the overall decorative programme.
