English abstract

This chapter considers the early development of musique concrète, from the formative years of Schaeffer’s initial investigations in the early 1940s to the publication of À la recherche d’une musique concrète in 1952. Access to the archives of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) resulting from this commission for the book, a joint venture between the GRM and CNRS, has facilitated the writing of a perspective that throws new light on this key period in the evolution of electroacoustic music, especially in the context of the technologies involved and the innovative ways in which they were used by Schaeffer.
