Additional information

This is the first paper to directly image the dynamics of deformation in semi-solid alloys at the crystal-scale, enabling the microstructural response to load to be quantified. Prior to this, understanding was based on post mortem characterisation of fully-solid samples. It provided direct proof that grain-level phenomena in semi-solid alloys are analagous to those in soils and firm evidence for the claims made in Gourlay & Dahle, Nature 2007. This, and subsequent work, led to £470k EPSRC grant EP/K026763/1 (Gourlay PI 2013-16).
