A Basis Illumination Approach to BRDF Measurement
<26>This paper proposed a novel computational illumination technique and measurement setup for rapid BRDF measurement for computer graphics and vision applications. Prior techniques for BRDF measurement made dense measurements with point source illumination. This paper proposes projecting basis illumination conditions instead of measuring coefficients of the BRDF in the chosen basis. This paper was published in the top venue for computer vision - IJCV, as part of Marr Prize special issue. Marr prize is the most prestigious award in computer vision given to the best paper at the top computer vision conference ICCV, held every two years.
This paper extends an earlier conference paper that appeared at ICCV 2007 where it was recipient of a Marr Prize Honorable Mention. The ICCV paper proposed the optical setup and a set of zonal basis functions for measuring BRDFs. The IJCV paper further extends this to include measurements in a basis drawn from a BRDF model as well as measurements with a compressive sensing technique.
