Robust mechanisms of ventral furrow invagination require the combination of cellular shape changes
This BBSRC funded research (BBS/B/02495) contributes to the understanding of morphogenetic changes during embryo development. Defects that occur during this period can have profound effects that can lead to dramatic developmental aberrations that severely compromise the survival of the organism (e.g. spina bifida in humans). Interests in ths work is evidenced by the invitation to give a Plenary talk at the third international conference of self-healing materials (Bath, June-2011). Miodownik highlighted this work in episode 2 of his materials engineering TV series called How It Works, broadcast on BBC4 in April-2012 with a viewing audience of more than a million.
