Additional information

This paper reports the variation in the strain distribution in an instrumented tibial nail with simulated fracture healing. It was shown that the instrumented nail can detect physiologically relevant changes in stiffness during the healing process, and is thus able to provide an objective monitor of fracture repair. The impact of this work is that with implantable instrumented nails it will be possible for the surgeon to have advance warning of when it is best to remove the nail. Work is now underway to achieve this in an animal model.
