Scanned Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy detects metastatic breast cancer in sentinel lymph nodes
This work tested an optical scanner in theatre to detect lymph node cancer, in direct comparison with cytology and Polymerase Chain Reaction techniques, creating immediate impact with surgical practitioners. The technique is designed to create accurate, intraoperative diagnosis of metastatic cancer, immediately informing surgical practice and improve treatment and patient care. The relatively inexpensive nature of this tool makes it affordable for institutions outside teaching hospitals in the developed world. This research was recognized by the award of a Medical Futures innovation award in 2008, but has not yet reached clinical practice.
