Additional information

The work was performed in collaboration with Boeing. Boeing are assessing passive millimetre wave imaging technology for wire detection with a view to using it on some of their aircraft particularly helicopters. It represented the first quantitative comparison of real time passive millimetre wave, infrared and visible cameras for this task. During data collection environmental conditions including the millimetric sky temperature were measured facilitating good data analysis. QinetiQ and Boeing went on to bid and win a US government contract to develop this passive millimetre wave technology.
