Beginning Film Studies
Beginning Film Studies appears in a series that addresses in the first instance a student readership. However, it embodies original research, is designed fully to engage peers in Film Studies as well as those whom they teach, and aims to make a distinctive contribution to the field besides offering thorough, critical assessment of existing scholarship and paradigms. Rather than being content simply with offering a picture of the discipline in its current moment, the book seeks throughout to advance Film Studies by anticipating and practising future kinds of research: e.g. Chapter 6’s original discussion of fan fictions to complicate and extend the discipline’s auteurist debates, and Chapter 7’s pioneering calibration of the film star’s charisma against other models of contemporary stardom, notably in sport. Each of the book’s chapters also concludes with a freshly researched case study, these ranging from new textual readings to Chapter 10’s essay in cultural geography and ethnography with respect to a specific site of film consumption in Derby.
