This highly cited, collaborative paper (90 citations, Oct 13) applied imaging analysis methods, developed by Counsell who led the image analysis in this study, to adult traumatic brain injury patients cared for by Prof Sharp. It showed that after brain trauma diffuse white matter damage is a strong predictor of impaired cognitive function even in the absence of focal brain injury. Post-traumatic diffuse white matter injury is now a major focus of clinical diagnostic and mechanistic research around the world. This paper is published in a leading neurology journal.
