This book synthesises insights from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including cultural studies, sociology and political science. It thus aggregates and analyses a considerable body of both primary and secondary sources. The book builds on three major research projects: my PhD thesis; an AHRC- funded secondment to the UK’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport; and an AHRC-funded Connected Communities project. As such the book has required a lengthy period of gestation and development, in order to synthesise a variety of research outcomes into a unified and coherent whole.
