Surrealism and Photography in Czechoslovakia: On the Needles of Days
Fijalkowski’s research draws extensively on primary research (visits to archives, interviews with photographers, Czech scholars and surrealists) and secondary sources (publications, catalogues and other texts, for the most part not easily accessible to Anglophone audiences). The book is structured into seven roughly chronological chapters, interspersed with six shorter case-study analyses, each looking in detail at either a single practitioner or a specific group. Fijalkowski was responsible for single authorship of Chapters 4 and 6, co-authorship of Chapters 1 and 7 and the Introduction, and single authorship of 2 of 6 photo analyses (A and C). Parts of three chapters draw on previously published material ('Tate Papers' and 'History of Photography', both 2005); these have been updated, augmented with new research, and re-edited for the present publication.
