On the edge of chaos: Inner city schools and the unequal burden of uncertainty
This paper, examines the phenomenon of disorder in English schools as symptomatic of major systemic contradictions. It sees disorder as a form of resistance; a complex issue which needs a new paradigm for educational sociology engaging with contemporary developmental psychology. Sidorenko draws on constructivist developmentalism of Robert Kegan and complexity theory and argues for a new ecological approach. She argues that post /structuralist analyses fail to capture the dynamic aspects of educational processes or the role of agency in constructing disorder and failure. The new ecological paradigm offers fresh insights into the relationship between social class and educational under/privilege.
