Additional information

Dominic Hingorani is co-Artistic Director of Brolly productions and he wrote, directed and produced a stage adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel Guantanamo Boy by Anna Perera for the stage for a new and diverse audience of 13+. The project has attracted funding from the Arts Council (£25,578), Stratford Circus Arts Centre (£16,000), Stanley Johnson Foundation (£1,500), Unity Trust (£1,000) Victoria Hall Foundation (£1,600) and UEL Individual Research and Creative Communities funds in 2009/2010 (£2,940) and 2010/2011 (£3,080). Brolly successfully produced and created a full production that sold out and achieved audience figures of 94% at Stratford Circus where it was programmed for 18 performances from 31 January to 11 February 2012. While Stratford Circus currently offers a theatre programme for young audiences up to the age of 11, the venue wanted to address the lack of ‘emotionally challenging’ theatre work for a teenage audience and therefore commissioned Brolly to create and produce a stage adaptation of Guantanamo Boy. Stratford Circus is based in Newham, which is one of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in England, and aims to offer theatre work that can engage with, develop and reflect the concerns of that diverse audience – in line with current Arts Council priorities. The main protagonist of Guantanamo Boy is a young Northern Muslim British Asian man. The novel is set in the aftermath of 9/11 and was written in response to the fact that children, as well as adults, were being held in Guantanamo Bay. The production was 60 minutes long and integrated sound, AV, and design, and played to an audience of 90. It was accompanied by workshops and post show discussions exploring the issues raised in the production. The production will undertake a national tour in November 2013 supported by ACE (£48, 985).
