HandCARE: A Cable-Actuated Rehabilitation System to Train Hand Function After Stroke
Stroke survivors currently get too little training, due in part to the high cost of therapists. With the simple robotic interface for rehabilitation of hand functions we describe in this paper, patients are able to train independently in rehabilitation centres or at home. Subsequent clinical tests on chronic patients showed significant improvement of both hand and arm functions (J NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation 2011;8:63, doi:10.1186/1743-0003-8-63), although only the hand was trained. Provisional patents (PCT/GB2009/001449, PCT/SG2010/000209) have been filed. This rehabilitation work led to 5 keynote and plenary lectures in Europe, Asia and America and 13 invited presentations since 2008.
