Additional information

This paper, co-authored by biological collaborators, proposes a way to rigorously analyse the control performance of a fly-robot interface using control engineering tools. Our method is the first to analyse the control properties of visual interneurons for optomotor control in closed-loop conditions; most experiments have been done in open-loop conditions due to the practical difficulties of testing. The proposed methods and biological control mechanisms identified in this paper can bridge the gap between experiments that are testable under open-loop conditions and the design of real-world systems, including bio-inspired autonomous robots, that are generally controlled under closed-loop conditions.
