Additional information

Combining biophysical theory and novel bioengineering approaches, this paper demonstrated the critical role of interfaces (e.g. a lipid bilayer) in the nucleation of amyloid fibrils. It has been cited by 5 recent reviews, e.g. Physiological Reviews 2011;91:795-826 and Annual Review of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering 2011; 2:147-171. The experimental method invented in this paper led to three subsequent publications and a patent application (UK # 0913773.8). I have presented this work in over 10 invited seminars (McGill University; CNRS, Grenoble & Toulouse; Université Nice Sophia-Antipolis; Max Planck Institutes, Göttingen & Dresden; Universities of Edinburgh, Sussex, Warwick, Oxford, and Sheffield).
