Additional information

This paper is the first of three papers studying the cause of a magnitude-dependent biodynamic nonlinearity during whole-body vibration. This unique experiment involved the measurement of vertical and fore-and-aft forces of 12 recumbent subjects. It applied a distinct intermittent excitation to examine the effects of shear history on the human body, providing the first experimental evidence of the cause of the biodynamic nonlinearity extensively reported in the past two decades. The study has influenced other studies in the area (e.g. Toward and Griffin, 2009, 2011; Basri and Griffin, 2011, 2012).
