Additional information

This paper addresses two major society and industry grant challenges of energy and sustainability. In this paper introduced for the first time mathematical models and methodology (basis for software) for optimising energy use in manufacture through appropriate objective functions. The paper demonstrates that the energy intensity of machining can be improved by 64%. The paper is published in a key publication of the International Academy of Production Engineering. The bottom-up approach was key to winning a 1.4 million EPSRC EXHUME project in 2012 where I lead resource efficiency and optimisation in cross sector re-manufacturing.
