A holistic integrated dynamic design and modelling approach applied to the development of ultraprecision micro-milling machines
Brunel developed a holistic integrated dynamics design and modelling approach for ultraprecision machines, which in turn allowed UPM/ITP (industrial collaboration companies) to design and build multi-axis ultraprecision micro-milling machines. The approach is simulation-based and supports analysis and optimization of the overall machine dynamics performance at the design stage. The corresponding simulation design environment covers the dynamics of the machine structure, moving components, control system and the machining process, and can be used to predict the overall machine performance in a ‘virtual machine tool’ manner so as to assure the built machine right at the first setup.
