English abstract

This chapter examines the attitude and contribution of the Calvinistic Methodists, the largest religious denomination in Wales, to education and the Welsh language, including the growing use of print to disseminate information and to fashion a communal identity, along with the development of institutions like Sunday schools and denominational colleges. By providing educational opportunities and developing a vibrant print culture, an important effect was had on Welsh society and culture more widely, although this was often the result of pioneering individuals within the movement rather than the lead taken by the denomination itself.
