A methodology for the determination of foamed polymer contraction rates as a result of cryogenic CNC machining
The paper provides new knowledge to CNC machine polypropylene sculptured surfaces using ball-end cutters from the generation of a predictive model for optimised machining parameters for a specific surface roughness. The research is one of the outputs from a £420k EPSRC research programme (GR/R67507/01) on the rapid manufacture of shoe soles. The paper was invited for publication from the international conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing in 2009. The research has led to a follow-on EPSRC KTA EP/H500103/1 research grant of £145k with Renishaw plc to design a desktop machine tool for insole manufacture.
