Investigating media use and the television user experience in the home
The journal article presents the work of a Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) project, which Tsekleves led. The project investigated media use in people’s homes including Television (TV), music and internet use. The project involved two universities and researchers in media communication and digital design.
The article reports the findings of an ethnographic study of 70 participants in the Greater London area on their experiences and frustrations of media use in the home. The novelty lies in the experimental second screen device employed during contextualised interviews to encourage and facilitate discussion with participants and the generation of new ideas.
Several emerging ideas around media use were pilot tested with participants through this device, allowing users to control their TV content and simulate sharing media, such as photos and videos with cohabitants. Several of the ideas presented in the paper indirectly informed TV services, which can be now seen materialised in commercial activities, such as Sky’s iPad service and Samsung’s TV AllShare Play services.
