Double-weighted statement

The double-weighting of my monograph, Atlantic Families: Lives and Letters in the Later Eighteenth Century, is justified on the scale and scope of the research effort. The book has 100,000 words and rests on an enormous body of primary source material across archives in multiple nations. I visited more than twenty archives in the United States and the United Kingdom. I began the research for this book in 1997 when it was my Harvard PhD thesis, and it was published in 2008. In the course of that research, I read and researched literally thousands of eighteenth-century manuscript letters.
