Antipolitics in Central European Art: Reticence as Dissidence under Post-Totalitarian Rule 1956-1989
This abundantly illustrated monograph is the result of eight years’ work in four countries: The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Research and image gathering entailed developing close relationships with artists across the region, repeated visits to personal archives and small institutions, extensive interviewing, and translation from five languages. The fresh empirical material gathered in this way was examined in relation to dissident literature and the contested political history of the turbulent period 1956-1989. The book develops an account of the relationship between art and politics addressed equally to a regional audience and international scholars in several disciplines.
