Liver resection with a new multiprobe bipolar radiofrequency device
I invented a multiprobe bipolar radiofrequency device, capable of coagulating larger blood vessels than prior devices, to reduce blood loss in liver (tumour) resection. This report describes the first clinical use of the device; it shows a halving of mortality, morbidity and hospital stay. As a result of this improvement, the device has been commercialised by Angiodynamics Inc. (http://www.angiodynamics.com/products/habib-4x); they have sold over 23,000 devices (value US$48M) which equates to a reduction in mortality of approximately 1000 lives. The paper has inspired additional clinical studies which report similar benefit e.g. Stavrou et.al. ANZ J Surg. 2009;79:624-628
