Injuries from roadside improvised explosive devices.
This paper identified the IED as the most prevalent cause of injury and death to coalition troops in recent conflicts. Its wide applicability is shown by diversity of citations (e.g. in biomedical engineering, orthopaedic, injury prevention and radiology journals). Led to a fully-funded PhD student from the military in our Department. Resulted in numerous invited lectures (2012 Citron Lecture, St Georges Hospital; 2011 Plenary session, Trauma Care Telford; 2010 Edinburgh International Instructional Trauma Course; 2010 Edinburgh International Trauma Symposium; and others), awards (2010 DMS Clinical Excellence Silver Award), and an ABC travelling fellowship to the US for the senior author.
