Stretching single talin rod molecules activates vinculin binding.
We used nanotechnological and biophysical techniques to reveal that mechanical unfolding of protein domains is a cellular mechanism for transforming mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals. Selected by ScienceWatch (Thomson Reuters) as the most influential 2009 article in the field of Biology and Biochemistry (http://archive.sciencewatch.com/dr/fbp/2009/09octfbp/). Other publications in top international journals highlighted the repercussions of this research: Schwartz "The force is with us," Science 2009;323:588-589, Heinrichs "Switch and Stretch," Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology 2009 doi:10.1038/nrm2642. A 5-year ERC starting grant (€2M) was awarded based on this work. Led to speaker invitation, International Congress of the Spanish Biophysical Society 2012.
