Additional information

The magnetoimpedance effect is extensively used for developing high-sensitivity miniature magnetic sensors. We introduce a novel magnetoimpedance element, comprising a soft nucleus (CoFeSiB), intermediate nonmagnetic insulating layer, and hard outer shell (CoNi). An asymmetric magnetoimpedance response from the soft layer is obtained, through magnetostatic coupling with the hard phase. This makes biphase microwires very attractive as sensing elements in magnetic-field sensor devices and materials, since they exhibit self-bias and asymmetric magnetoimpedance. This collaborative work involved Plymouth University and Institute for Materials Science, CSIC, Madrid.
