English abstract

“In 2010, incoming students to UC Berkeley were invited to send buccal swabs to campus so that their DNA could be tested for various traits. The program proved controversial in terms of privacy protection for students, means of delivering and following up medically relevant findings, corporate involvement in the testing in an educational setting, and ownership of samples and bioinformation. Aspects of the program were abandoned. I developed a program, “Teach Before You Test,” described here. This paper contributes to my work on the changing relation of individuals and societies to their biological tissue in the age of personalized medicine.”
