Additional information

The Handbook of Music and Emotion forms a standard reference book for research on emotion in the context of music perception, music therapy, and music performance. The chapter by Renee Timmers (co-authored with Patrik Juslin) provides an overview of the state of the art in research on communication of emotion through music performance. Patrik Juslin invited Renee Timmers to co-author the chapter because, in his words, Timmers' work was the main innovation in performance and emotion research since the first edition of the book on Music and Emotion (published in 2001). The chapter in the Handbook of Music and Emotion is a substantial revision and elaboration of this initial chapter and includes results of and references to five of Timmers' publications (Timmers (2007) Musicae Scientiae; Timmers (2007) Journal of Acoustical Society of America; Timmers & Ashley (2007) Music Perception; Timmers, Marolt, Camurri & Volpe (2006) Psychology of Music). Timmers' contribution to the chapter was to reshape the argument, add elaborations and revisions, as well as to add the content related to her prior work. Google scholar finds 30 references to this chapter.

Timmers' research on emotion and performance is further recognised by invitations to examine PhD theses on related topics, to act as reviewer and action editor. The research reported in this chapter has been presented at several conferences, including at the AHRC funded CHARM workshops and an invitation to talk at the Italian Conservatory of Lugano, Switzerland.
