English abstract

Historians, sociologists, and literary critics widely agree that novels are very powerful vectors of memory. This is especially true for best-selling novels which tend to reflect anchored ideologies, unlike ‘great literature’ which tends to challenge them (Iser, Heinich). This monograph analyses German characters in instant best-selling French novels published between 1945 and 1949. In doing so, it reveals in hollow how the French perceived themselves in the aftermath of a conflict which was also a civil war.
