Bistable dark solitons of a cubic-quintic Helmholtz equation
The mathematical techniques reported here for describing dark solitons in purely-spatial Helmholtz equations have provided a platform for understanding similar solutions for more complicated material nonlinearities: exact dark solitons for a generic self-defocusing saturable material were presented at the 2012 European Optical Society Annual Meeting (in session TOM6). Given the synergy between spatial and spatiotemporal governing equations, this research has also paved the way toward a full understanding of the space-time dark solitons detailed in three recent Physical Review publications. Longer-term impact includes the subsequent analyses of spatiotemporal cubic-quintic dark solitons (delivered in a second paper at the TOM6 session).
