Influence of swimming speed on inter-arm coordination in competitive unilateral arm amputee front crawl swimmers
Biomechanics research on physically disabled swimmers is rare. This study is original and significant as it presents data on a group of thirteen swimmers with the same physical impairment, a single at-elbow amputation. In a systematic review of research on individuals with limb amputations and sport participation (Bragaru et al., 2011), this study received the highest quality score of all the papers in the biomechanics and athletic performance category. The research was funded by British Swimming and involved national and international collaboration. It demonstrated that unilateral arm amputees swim front crawl using a very different coordination from able bodied swimmers.
