Additional information

This paper presents results on enhanced exchange anisotropy in IrMn/CoFeB systems and evidence for its origin in uncompensated interfacial spins, jointly obtained using our samples with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at Stanford Synchrotron Laboratory. Important to the advancement of spintronic technology, these results provide critical experimental evidence for the origin of exchange anisotropy, an outstanding scientific issue for over 50 years despite successful technological applications of the effect. The work has attracted worldwide attention and motivated research in new exchange-bias materials and nanomagnetic devices (e.g. H. Fulara et al, J.Appl. Phys; S. Liu et al, IEEE Trans. Nanotech).
