Modification of the conductance of single fullerene molecules by endohedral doping
This paper represents an advance in studying transport properties of single molecules, replacing traditional statistical methods on bulk samples with direct measurements via STM created single molecule contacts. The paper also better explained lower conductance in these species compared to empty fullerenes by the absence of orbital delocalisation in the region of the incarcerated atom. A critical review (Chem. Soc. Rev., 2012, 41, 7723) concluded the paper contributed to the establishment of a principle that strongly bound incarcerated metal atoms gave very low electron transport, but here the atom may roam within the cage transport is much higher.
