Age Differences in the Perception of Social Presence in the Use of 3D Virtual World for Social Interaction
This paper shows, for the first time, how older people mimicked their “offline behaviour” when engaged in online interaction in a 3D virtual environment. This has a major impact on our understanding of how older people experience social presence in 3D virtual worlds, which are potentially a powerful technological platform to support healthy ageing. It also underpinned the success of Ang’s EPSRC grant (EP/J010766/1), which involves collaboration with AgeUK (Judith Griffiths, Chief Officer, judith-accanterbury@tiscali.co.uk) and Silverfit (Netherlands), a company designing and developing virtual rehabilitation environments for older people (Joris Wiersinga, joris@silverfit.nl).
