This research was developed over a decade, relying on the collection and analysis of hundreds of primary sources (many unpublished or not easily accessible); these sources were textual (all genres, and in medieval Greek, medieval Latin and Arabic), material (e.g. archaeological sites, coins and seals), and 'art historical'. The result is a complex and extensive re-evaluation of a 200-year period of history that would seem to merit double weighting.
