New Static "AirArc" EMTP Model of Long Arc in Free Air
The physical processes underlying an electric arc are complex. From practical measurements, however, it was possible to derive the "AirArc" static arc model, which was incorporated into the ATP-EMTP and PSCAD commercial software packages and is under evaluation by UMIP (http://umip.com/) for filing as a patent. The model will enable understanding of the aging processes of power system elements for design of plant components and protective algorithms. Alstom-Grid (contact details available) is currently testing the new model for inclusion in the next generation of protection products and "AirArc" is on the list of CIGRE C4-503 benchmark models (http://c4.cigre.org/WG-Area/WG-C4.503-Numerical-techniques-for-the-computation-of-power-systems-from-steady-state-to-switching-transients).
