Additional information

For the first time it was shown that GPR can penetrate brick masonry rings and identify the presence of and thickness of a clay waterproofing saddle above the rings. This work, funded by NetworkRail, is expected to save up to £2M per bridge in unnecessary maintenance (Brian Bell, ex-NetworkRail, email available), with ownership of 40,000 bridges. When applied to European rail bridges the savings could extend to €10M per annum. The work has inspired international researchers to develop novel hybrid NDT procedures: Spain, DoI:10.1016/j.engstruct.2011.11.004; France, DoI:10.1080/15583058.2011.597484; Italy, DoI:10.3997/1873-0604.2012047; and Poland, DoI:10.1016/j.ndteint.2012.03.001.
