<22> This paper is the accompaniment to the one which won the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems Outstanding Paper Award (doi:10.1109/TFUZZ.2006.889764). It has had a huge impact on the field, shifting the focus of worldwide research in this area from interval type-2 systems to general type-2 systems. Recent advances in the field: alpha-planes (doi:10.1109/TFUZZ.2009.2024411), Z-slices (doi:10.1109/TFUZZ.2010.2045386) and alpha-cuts (doi.10.1109/FUZZY.2010.5584783) all follow from this work.
