Discriminating Disorder from Difference Using Dynamic Assessment with Bilingual Children
This paper was the product of 10 years’ developmental work into Dynamic assessment (DA). It reports an innovative test battery incorporating vocabulary and sentence structure subtests while embracing the recent philosophical shift in speech and language therapy towards DA. The grammatical subtest, devised by Hasson, extended her previous research to younger children, and identified significant differences between diverse groups of children, with clinically and theoretically important implications. Targeting a specific, diverse and difficult to test population not previously investigated in such large numbers, this is the first test to differentiate bilingual children with language disorders. Clinical uptake is already substantial.
