Additional information

This paper describes how annular rings are actively switched in frequency to control the transmission response of a frequency selective surface. Importantly, the novel biasing arrangement on the same surface as the ring elements has minimal interaction with the RF response – solving a historically major problem for active surfaces. The technology dynamically maximizes frequency reuse of WiFi in buildings, such as hospitals, potentially reducing electromagnetic interference in susceptible medical equipment. This work arose from the interdisciplinary European collaborative project SYSIASS (SYStéme Intelligent et Autonome d’aide aux Soins de Santé), funded by the European Commission Inter-regional scheme (6-020-FR-SYSIASS).
