Wellenfang / Wave Catcher 2010
On the occasion of Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 and in the context of the collaborative exhibition developed by the Museums of the Ruhr area - Mapping the Region - Kubisch developed an extensive mapping project based on electromagnetic investigations. The project featured:
• An exhibition of electromagnetic sounds and images at the Skulpturenmuseum Marl. The sounds and images were gathered during electrical walks across the region. Listeners in the gallery space are able to connect the photographic images of the area with the specific electromagnetic or digital sounds associated with them. Examples of these are included in the portfolio.
• Electrical Walks in Dorsten, Gelsenkirchen-Buer, Oberhausen, Marl and Recklinghausen. These walks were distinct from the previous works in the Electrical Walks series (2004-) as the custom designed headphones were significantly modified to detect digital transmission as well as the electro-magnetic signals more usually associated with this practice.
• A film Wave Catcher in collaboration with Peter Simon and Eckehard Güther. Here is an extract from the film: http://vimeo.com/57325864. The full film is in the portfolio.
• A catalogue with texts by Uwe Rüth and Rahma Khazam, and a DVD included in the portfolio.
Kubisch’s Ruhr Soundscape maps the Ruhr conurbation revealing hidden everyday sounds with her modified headphones. This work builds on the Electrical Walks project instigated by Kubisch in 2004. The distinctive development in this project is the development of new headphones with the ability to pick up digital transmissions as well as electromagnetic signals.
