A Near-Infrared (NIR) Technique for Imaging Food Materials
This paper describes the use of near-infrared signals for NDE measurements. The technique uses a modulated source and a lock-in amplifier detection circuit that give high sensitivity to changes in through-transmission signal levels, allowing the internal content of various foods to be imaged. Examples are presented of the detection of foreign bodies, both metallic and non-metallic, including polymers, ceramics, and packaging materials. This non-contact technique has many applications in the inspection of materials and structures, and was licensed to a UK food inspection company. This discovery has led to UK and International patents, No. WO2008001141, JP2009543036, EP2049885, CN101479594, GB0613165.
